Greta Gaines
(Justice)
Never fear, Greta Gaines fans — the singing, guitar-slinging, Women’s Extreme Snowboarding champion’s flirtation with Britney-styled urban/electronic pop appears to have been just that, a flirtation. For Whiskey Thoughts Gaines journeyed to Nashville, enlisted a crack backing band along with some stellar guests (among them, Raul Malo, Ian Moore and Willie Nelson), and got back to her proverbial roots.
With a sultrysteamysexycool voice pitched midway between Sheryl Crow and kd lang, Gaines would seem a sure bet at radio. And with all the right AAA bases touched, from Music Row country-pop (“Love Is Twisted,” w/Malo dueting), Stonesy heartland rock (“Braggart”) and churning, anthemic twang (the title track), she reassures all her early devotees that she’s still got “it” — what brought her to them in the first place. Coming next to a honky-tonk near you.
