Delicious Vinyl All Stars
(Delicious Vinyl)
In terms of label tags, Delicious Vinyl never quite fit in with the rap pack what with the spaced-out hip hop of the Pharcyde and the cheery acid jazz of Brand New Heavies alongside popularists like the gruff-n-guttural Tone Loc and the brightly chipper Young MC. Though hardly street-pop like Def Jam or avant-garde like Sleeping Bag, there was something off abut Delicious Vinyl; you knew you’d get something odd and thumping. But would it be good odd? Would it have a darker brand of Latin soul like Masta Ace or something fliply funky like Fatlip?
With that question at hand, it’s nice to know that this volume (a second is being planned) is a mostly technotronic electro-funk peek into the Delicious catalog: Hot Chip’s church chiming version of Pharcyde’s rolling best; Aaron LaCrate and Debonair Samir's B-more take on a lesser-known (isn’t everything but “Bust a Move”?) Young MC cut; Diplo and Don Rimini clubbing up “Bust a Move.” Despite the appearance of new heads Cory Nitta (Pink Enemy/Philippians) and Bobby Evans (Brother Reade), a surprisingly dense and rocking production comes courtesy Eminem who makes Masta Ace’s “Slaughterhouse” spicier than you imagine they both could sound. Very promising all around, and delicious to boot.
Standout Tracks: “Wild Thing” (Peaches’ cover of Tone Loc), “Passin’ Me By” (Hot Chip’s cover of Pharcyde) A.D. AMOROSI
