What exactly is a "Rhumb Line?" Ra Ra Riot's new album, released through indie label moguls Barsuk, forced a search on the good ol' l'internet and produced this result (copied verbatim from Dictionary.com): a Rhumb Line is the path taken by a vessel or aircraft that maintains a constant compass direction.

How accurately appropriate for the Syracuse sextet, as Ra Ra Riot proves unstoppable. Constant touring and passion-filled live performances have garnered them: a faithful following, Barsuk Records and a catchy debut to snare more fans. The Rhumb Line does not introduce devoted Riot listeners to new tracks, as it includes songs released on past EPs; yet, the songs have been given a sonic makeover and sound enhanced (quality wise).

Riot effortlessly transforms songs about loneliness, death, and social ineptness into charged, danceable and even "happy" numbers via upbeat drumming and punchy bass lines. As if this was not a good enough infusion to the Riot mix, the Syracuse band includes a cellist and violinist; these additions elevate the tracks to a beautiful plateau. Rhumb Line is a great mixture of fast paced tracks with slow and delicate songs and makes for a diverse debut.

Standout tracks: "Ghost Under Rocks," "Winter ‘05," "Oh, La" APRIL S. ENGRAM
