Uh Huh Her
(Nettwerk)
Disco's not dead. The sounds of the ‘70s are as engaging as ever. New wave champs like Blondie, the Motels and Missing Persons left a lingering legacy. Uh Huh Her would have you believe all of the above. On the other hand, if you find those precepts more a matter of "been there, done that," this diva-esque duo may leave you less than impressed. Not that they don't try; helmed by actress/musician Leisha Hailey and singer/multi-instrumentalist Camila Grey, Uh Huh Her oozes sexual innuendo, undulating atmospherics and a seductive saunter. Add breathless vocals, relentless rhythms and a slew of synths, and the resulting sound becomes one tailor-made for dance devotees.
Unfortunately, the pulsating beats that underscore these offerings make it difficult to differentiate one track from another. Consequently, it takes the darker designs of "Say So," the hazy sprawl of "Away From Here" and the subdued rumination of "Dreamer" to provide some much needed respite. However, given the fact that Hailey and Grey are merely fiddling with a formula, the common reaction to Common Reaction will likely make for a more muted response.
