Walter Meego
(Almost Gold Recordings)
Do not let the name misguide you: Walter Meego is not one person-can you imagine the taunting a child would've suffered with a name like that?-but a Chicago duo. The twosome creates electronic, dance music that incorporates an overabundance of loops, synthesizers and effects to create convulsive pop tracks. Recreating sounds reminiscent of ‘80s electronica, Walter Meego joins the monsoon of bands resurrecting, and leaping onto, this infectious bandwagon.
Their full-length debut Voyager combines songs from their previous EPs, and tunes such as "Keyhole," "More Than I Can Say," and "Wanna Be A Star" all went under the knife. However, the facelift was not needed as the songs were catchy and perfectly balanced the electronics, keyboard, vocals and guitar - a seamless blend of rock and dance. However, with Voyager, all of these songs are now bombarded with the sounds of laser beams, distortion and noise. This is not to say that the songs are no longer pleasing; yes, they still contain their catchy melodies and punchy drum beats that caught the ear in the first place. However, after hearing the songs in their more "pure" form, this reviewer finds the extra layer of clamor excessive.
