Paramount Styles
(Konkurrent)
Paramount Styles is Scott McCloud of Girls Against Boys, checking in with a solo debut five years after the breakup of the post-punk band whose legacy is why you might be interested. It's a mellower, moodier effort than GVSB, and the first sound you hear is the strum of acoustic guitar. But if using a band name for a solo project is his way of letting you know he's still not ready for the coffeehouse, well, fair enough because even that opening cut is plenty insistent, recalling the minor-key rock of the Smithereens' "Blood and Roses," with Alexis Fleisig of GVSB on the beat and some slashing guitar from McCloud.
Other highlights range from "Race You Til Tomorrow," a Velvet Underground-style grind underscoring his talk-singing rasp, to "Come To New York," a sardonic salute to the city featuring Angela McCluskey adding to the eerie sense of atmosphere with Stevie Nicks-style harmonies.
