Mike Gordon
(Rounder)
Phish fans: If you ever feel homesick and lonely, throw bassist Mike Gordon's new album on and relax. You'll be back in the good ‘ole days in no time. Familiar sounds and new, adventurous melodies exemplify how Gordon has grown as an artist and lyricist since his first solo effort, 2003's Inside In. The album also features guest appearances by household jamband names like Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, and Bill Kreutzmann, who throw in creative bits of music to create an incredible musical journey for the listener.
The album moves back and forth from upbeat, funky rhythms to long, jazzed-out ballads, along with a few surprises and jams in between. Tracks like "Andelmans' Yard" and "Voices" seem like they should featured on a soundtrack to a Disney movie, while others, such as "Traveled Too Far", remind you that Gordon is still the king of creating catchy, simplistic riffs that will be stuck in your head for days.
No need to feel down, Phish phans: the band will be back together in no time. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy Gordon's newest release, with tunes you're sure to hear if and when a reunion occurs.
