Break and Repair Method
While Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas has obviously been the one to profit the most from the band's rapid rise to stardom, at least in terms of his solo stardom, it appears that drummer Paul Doucette is also poised to share that spotlight. Indeed, with the release of an impressive side project dubbed The Break and Repair Method, Doucette takes his pop panache one step further.
While the Break and Repair banner doesn't offer any hint at as to attitude or aptitude, the music made on its debut, Milk the Bee, is remarkably revealing, an unabashed blend of effusive optimism and sparkling, shifting melodies. Titles like "You Won't Be Able To Be Sad," "Life Gets Beautiful" and "Won't Get Worse" reflect its bounty of upbeat offerings, each chock-full of ready refrains and loping tempos that affirm Doucette's starry-eyed sentiment. Likewise, "This City Is Bound to Do Us In," "Forget About The Brightside" and "I'm At a Low" provide the contemplative yin to that celebratory yang, and if their sentiments seem more demure, their appeal is just as striking. An excellent debut, Milk the Bee shows Doucette doesn't necessarily need that Matchbox to light a fire of his own.
