Dance-punk innovators The Rapture have put down their guitars, synths, and
drums for a bit in order to grab a couple of crates of vinyl and flex their
skills on the turntables. The mixing is solid and not flashy, and the selection
takes the listener on an educated journey from early funk and soul into nascent
house and disco, culminating in more modern minimal techno. The only oddity
thrown in is Ghostface Killah's 1996 classic, "Daytona 500." This is the only
hip-hop song, but its funky Bob James sample allows it to blend in. The
Bar-Kays "Holy Ghost," "I'm An Indian Too" by Don Armando's Second Avenue Rumba
Band and the seminal "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" from Vaughan Mason & Crew
give the first half of the mix a 1970s
NYC street party flavor.
Soon, though, the atmosphere subtly shifts to the club dancefloor with Paul Johnson, Armand Van Helden and Kid Crème anchoring the mix in four-on-the-floor beats. A serious DJ mix, emphasizing the club influence that is already very evident in The Rapture's original work.
